Siemens secures order for Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm

Siemens Energy has secured an order from DONG Energy to supply 111 wind turbines for what will be Denmark’s largest offshore wind power plant. The 400 megawatts (MW) Anholt Offshore Wind Farm will feature a capacity almost twice that of Horns Rev 2, currently the world’s largest offshore wind farm in operation at 209 MW. When fully operational, the Anholt Offshore Wind Farm project will provide clean energy for approximately 400,000 households. This equals approximately 4 percent of Denmark’s total power consumption.

“The new order for the Anholt Offshore Wind Farm further strengthens our position as the global leader in offshore wind power,” said Wolfgang Dehen, CEO of Siemens Energy. “We’re very proud to once again work with DONG Energy on another high-profile, renewable energy project.”

Siemens will supply 111 wind turbines with a capacity of 3.6 MW and a rotor diameter of 120 meters to the Anholt Offshore Wind Farm project. The wind turbines will be produced at Siemens plant in Brande in Denmark and installed off the east coast of Denmark, 20 km off the northeastern coast of the Jutland peninsula. The wind farm is expected to be commissioned in 2013. The scope of supply for Siemens includes the manufacturing, installation, and commissioning of the wind turbines. Siemens will also provide a service and maintenance agreement for the first five years, with an option of selected services during the second five years.

Siemens has been the leading provider of offshore wind turbines with more than 50 percent of the world’s offshore installations. The Siemens 3.6 MW wind turbine is the most popular offshore wind turbine in the world. More than 150 units have been installed in offshore projects across Europe so far and an additional 1,100 units are sold.

Wind turbines are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2009, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about EUR23 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of ecofriendly technologies. In the same period, the company’s products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons. This amount equals the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.
