DMT sends a new seismology boat down the ways With the launching of the “Explorer 5” DMT GmbH & Co. KG has put an additional “shallow marine seismic vessel” into service. This provider of technical services, headquartered in Essen, Germany, will use the boat for seismic measurements in the transition zone, the boundary area between deep sea and onshore seismic operations.
The “Explorer 5” is a further proprietary development by DMT in this class of boat. This vessel is distinguished by its lightweight aluminum design, its flexibility in deployment and its practicality in service. “The boat can be readied for use in no time at all and can be conveniently transported inside a standard shipping container,” explained DMT Department Manager Rene Pool during christening ceremonies for this vessel. Those festivities took place last month in the Netherlands. The “Explorer 5” will be employed primarily in shallow waters – in lakes and especially near coastlines in order to make seismic measurements in the “transition zone” between deep water and the shoreline. Here an air pulse unit, the “air gun”, generates acoustic waves that are then reflected from the earth’s strata. These acoustic reflections are picked up and measured with hydrophones connected to special cable networks. The time that passes before the sound returns and reaches the hydrophones gives DMT engineers insights into the geology of the subsurface strata. The system assists in detecting, exploring and developing previously unknown deposits of natural resources. “The Explorer 5 can, on the one hand, be used to lay the hydrophone cables. It can also transport the air gun, an environment-friendly sound source.” That was how Rene Pool described the further advantages of DMT’s newest development in this type of vessel. In the near future it is to be used around the world for major two and three-dimensional seismic projects. “Boats of this type operate brilliantly in shallow waters and in this way they help to expand and round out our range of services,” the DMT department manager explained.
