Tognum: 8-cylinder version of MTU Series 4000 engines for workboats now available

Propulsion for heavy-duty applications in tugs, inland waterway vessels
and offshore supply ships
Lower specific consumption and longer maintenance intervals
Power range: 746 to 2,240 kW
Fulfills EPA Tier 2, ZKR (CCNR) 2 and EU Stage IIIA
Suitable for genset or propulsion applications

Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen presents the 8-cylinder version of its innovative Series 4000 workboat engine at the Europort ship exhibition in Rotterdam which takes place from 3 to 6 November. The long-stroke engine from the “Iron Men” range has been specially optimized to meet the needs of workboats. Specific consumption has been reduced to 195 grams per kilowatt hour and maintenance intervals for major overhauls have been extended to up to 34,000 hours, depending on output and load profile. Thus Series 4000 now offers all configurations - 8V, 12V and 16V - for the 746 to 2,240 kW power range (1,000 to 3,000 bhp). The new engine meets all current emission requirements such as EPA Tier 2, CCNR 2 and EU Stage IIIA, and is designed for compliance with emissions regulations expected in the future.

Vessels such as ocean-going tugs, inland waterway vessels and fireboats are the workhorses of the workboat world. The use of diesel engines in workboats varies enormously depending on the type of ship. Different applications impose different demands on the engine. Inland waterway vessels which operate day and night need quite a different type of engine from a mega-yacht, for example. The key features of the “Iron Men” Series 4000 engines for workboats are therefore lowest possible fuel consumption, long maintenance intervals for minimum service life costs, and maximum availability and reliability
