RWE Dea: New gas findings in Algeria’s Sahara desert
RWE Dea has made two new gas discoveries in Algeria’s Sahara desert, in the Reggane and Ahnet
basins. The first of the two finds, exploration well KLS-1, is part of a new isolated structure known
as Kahlouche Sud in the North Reggane Concession. The first production tests registered flows
of 629,000 cubic meters per day of gas at a depth of 3,720 meters through a choke size of
32/64”.
The discovery in the OTLH-2 well in the M’Sari Akabli Concession exhibited a test flow of
249.000 cubic meters/day of gas at a depth of 1,280 meters, and 110.000 cubic
meters/day of gas at a depth of 1,340 meters both through choke sizes of 32/64”.
The significance of these discoveries goes far beyond the size of the new structures and the
fact that significant flow in the Lower Devonian level was established because they will also
support the future development plans for the area.
RWE Dea has a stake of 22.5 % in this concession area. Repsol operates the consortium with a
33.75% stake, Algeria’s state-owned Sonatrach controls 25%; and Italy’s Edison has a 18.75%
stake. The exploration rights to these blocks were awarded during the 2002/2003 Algerian
bidding rounds. During 2005-2007, three discoveries were made in Reggane: Sali-1 (SLI-1),
Kahlouche-2 (KL-2) and the Reggane-6 (RG-6), one exploration well in Upper Ordovician, plus
