EnBW offshore wind farm Baltic 2:
EnBW and Siemens sign contract for the supply of 80 wind turbines

EnBW Erneuerbare Energien GmbH and Siemens Energy have today signed a contract for the supply of 80 wind turbines each with a capacity of 3.6 megawatts (MW) and a rotor diameter of 120 meters for the offshore wind farm EnBW Baltic 2. The order, which represents an investment volume in the triple-digit million range, marks the first milestone in implementation of Germany’s second commercial offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea: EnBW Baltic 2.

EnBW Baltic 2 (previously Kriegers Flak) will be located approximately 32 kilometers north of the island of Rügen in the western Baltic and cover an area of approximately 27 square kilometers. First maritime civil works are scheduled to commence as early as 2012. With its 80 wind turbines each rated at 3.6 MW EnBW Baltic 2 will have a total capacity 288 MW. The offshore wind farm will generate 1,200 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually for approximately 340,000 households and reduce CO2 emissions by 900,000 tons. EnBW Baltic 2 is scheduled to come on line in 2013.

“Today’s contract signing is an important step in the expansion of our offshore wind power business. EnBW Baltic 2 will be approximately six times bigger than EnBW Baltic 1. And this expansion will continue: EnBW is planning to build a total of four offshore wind farms with a combined capacity of approximately 1,200 megawatts in the Baltic and North Sea,” stressed EnBW’s Chief Technical Officer and Member of Management Board Hans-Josef Zimmer on the occasion of the contract signing.

“Siemens and EnBW are pioneers in the development of offshore wind power in Germany,” said René Umlauft, CEO of the Renewable Energy Division of Siemens Energy. “After Baltic 1, Baltic 2 is the second offshore project to be jointly implemented by EnBW and Siemens in the Baltic Sea. Siemens is market and technology leader in the offshore wind power sector. With our reliable, field-proven wind power technology we can make a significant contribution toward the expansion of sustainable power supply in Germany,“ added Umlauft.

Wind turbines are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2009, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about EUR23 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of ecofriendly technologies. In the same period, the company’s products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons. This amount equals the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.

The Siemens Energy Sector is the world’s leading supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions for the generation, transmission and distribution of power and for the extraction, conversion and transport of oil and gas. In fiscal 2009 (ended September 30), the Energy Sector had revenues of approximately EUR25.8 billion and received new orders totaling approximately EUR30 billion and posted a profit of EUR3.3 billion. On September 30, 2009, the Energy Sector had a work force of more than 85,100.

With some six million customers and more than 21,000 employees; EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG generated annual revenue in excess of EUR15 billion in 2009. The third-largest energy company in Germany, EnBW focus on the electricity business and the gas as well as energy and environmental services business.
