Trelleborg Seal protects Shah Deniz subsea HIPPS valve

Aug. 25, 2015   + + +  Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has developed a new type of seal for a valve designed by Aberdeen-based Schoolhill Hydraulic Engineering for BP’s Shah Deniz field development in the Caspian Sea.
The high flow, high integrity subsea quick exhaust valve (QEV) was created for a subsea HIPPS (high integrity pressure protection system).

Trelleborg engineered a new version of its Captive Glyd Ring in low friction Zurcon Z43 high modulus thermoplastic, as the seal needed to slide across mating surfaces that had dimensional changes.

The seal is retained in a split groove, preventing damage to the sealing surface from a counter part with variable diameter or when passing holes.
The QEV has a 30-year design life with a valve qualification water depth range of 3,000 m (9,842 ft) and a safety integrity level (SIL) rating of SIL3 with 23,000 accumulated cycles. It provides a flow rate of 22 liters in 5 seconds (260 l/min), and has been designed to ensure quick and safe emergency shutdowns on the seafloor
