BP commissions subsea construction vessel build for Shah Deniz



2014-05-01 + + + BP has awarded Baku Shipyard LLC a $378-million contract to design and build a subsea construction vessel for the Shah Deniz Stage 2 gas field development, 70 km (43 mi) offshore in the Azeri sector of the Caspian Sea. Stage 2 requires a subsea installation vessel to install subsea structures between 2017 and 2027.

The vessel will be fitted with dynamic positioning to allow for work in 2.5 m (8.2 ft) significant wave height (Hs); a 750-metric ton (827-ton) main crane for subsea operations in 600 m (1,968 ft) water depth; an 18-man two-bell diving system; two Work Class ROVs; a strengthened moonpool; and two engine rooms with 6 x 4.4 MW + 2 x 3.2 MW engines. It will have deadweight of 5,000 metric tons (5,511 tons) at 6.5 m (21.3 ft) draft.

Keppel Offshore & Marine’s Marine Technology Development division will design the ship, which should be completed and delivered in April 2017.

This is the first major contract for Baku Shipyard since its inauguration last September by Azerbaijan’s President H.E. Ilham Aliyev. Co-developers are SOCAR, Azerbaijan Investment Co., and Keppel O&M, owning respectively 65%, 25%, and 10%.
