Shell Houdini: Working with one of the world's leading oil companies, Belden successfully applied Hirschmann™ WLAN technology to develop a tailor-made, secure and reliable plant-wide wireless process control system.
Shell Eastern Petroleum Ltd (SEPL) has recently completed its Ethylene Cracker Complex (ECC) as part of its “Houdini” project on the island of Pulau Bukom – Singapore. The full project included modifications and additions to the existing Bukom refinery.
Delivering a Complete Solution
The application required a full range of Hirschmann™ WLAN products including outdoor access points together with accessories, antennas, surge arrestors, managed switches, media converters and Industrial HiVision. For enhanced security, the EAGLE firewall was used at the demarcation point to the customer’s process LAN.
To build the backbone, we have used Belden’s PROFInet copper and fiber optic cables, as well as Lumberg Automation™ Ethernet M12 connectors for all Ethernet devices. At locations where wired LAN access was difficult, we enabled connectivity by applying cost effective and easy-to-manage wireless point to point links. A specific challenge for Belden was to provide all equipment with proper ATEX/IEC60079 certification for the challenging environmental conditions found in this project.
