Orlen Upstream: the first Polish company with a CIPS certificate

22.11.2011  + + +   ORLEN Upstream was awarded the CIPS certificate of excellence, which puts the company alongside giants such as Microsoft, British Airways, Vodafone, or Hewlett Packard. The certificate issued by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply confirms best practice in purchasing and supply management processes and guarantees that the company is following global standards.

ORLEN Upstream, a special purpose vehicle set up by PKN ORLEN S.A. to pursue its strategy with respect to exploration and production of oil and gas deposits, has completed the certification procedure of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply and is the first company in Poland to be awarded the CIPS certificate of excellence

“We are proud that we can stand alongside global giants, and we are even more pleased as ORLEN Upstream is the first Polish organisation to be distinguished by a CIPS certificate. This is not only evidence of our diligence in purchasing practices but also a global business card saying: it is worthwhile doing business with us” – states Wieslaw Prugar, CEO of ORLEN Upstream.

Established in 1932, the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS) is a global organisation with offices in the UK, South Africa, Australia and Middle East South Africa region. It is the leading opinion-forming institution in the field of supply chain management. The certification procedure comprises a detailed audit. During the procedure, a CIPS representative resided in the headquarters of ORLEN Upstream, analysing the purchasing policies, instructions and procedures of the company.

“As part f the process of perfecting purchasing operations, which took several years, we have been systematically implementing successive solutions. The purpose of the CIPS audit was to confirm that our approach to purchasing allows us to say that we are operating in line with the most advanced, global standards” – says Robert Piskunowicz, the Purchasing and Logistics Manager who coordinated the certification process on behalf of ORLEN Upstream. “The certificate proves that our activities are professional, transparent, and reproducible and contribute to delivering internal clients the products and services which meet their quality requirements, while not neglecting cost efficiency” – adds Robert Piskunowicz.

In 1992, CIPS was awarded a Royal Charter by HM Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of the high status of the institution. For 80 years, CIPS has been supporting employees and organisations in the private, public and third sectors in their strive for business excellence and implementation of international standards, through activities such as organisation of training courses and conferences, qualifications, developing tools for purchasing processes and awarding certificates to individuals and institutions and offering business solutions. Today, the organisation has over 65,000 in 150 countries who are concerned with various aspects of the purchasing process in their daily work. Around 100 companies can call themselves proud holders of a CIPS certificate, including brands such as Microsoft, British Airways, Vodafone, or Hewlett Packard.

David Noble, CIPS CEO commented on the certification: “This is our first accreditation in Poland and we hope this is one of many. We were impressed with the company for their drive to tackle the complexities of the sector and the drive they demonstrated to get through the accreditation process. We were particularly pleased with their level of standardisation of their procurement processes.

“We are working with the oil, gas and energy sector all over the world and see the same challenges emerging. CIPS certification shows companies are a ‘safe pair of hands’ as companies are pressurised to become more efficient in mitigating risks inherent in energy production and be able to cope with harsher and longer distances in oil exploration. The CIPS certification success will help ORLEN Upstream Sp. z o.o demonstrate their commitment to best practice and to benchmark themselves against other companies that have chosen this process to improve their competitiveness.” concludes

ORLEN Upstream also holds two certificates, for the Quality Management System according to the ISO 9001:2008 standard and the Environmental Management System according to the ISO 14001:2004 standard, which relate to its Exploration and Production Operations Management.
