The first four foundations have now been safely loaded onto the installation vessel Seafox 5 in Vlissingen, the Netherlands. Our photographer was at the scene and was able to capture some impressive night shots. Take a look at some of the first pictures, taken before its maiden voyage out to the DanTysk site... SWM & Vattenfall: Construction starts on one of Europe’s largest wind farms

February 8, 2013  ... Offshore construction work has started on the DanTysk offshore wind farm in the North Sea. Vattenfall and its partner Stadtwerke München plan to invest a little over 1 billion EUR in the wind farm, which is expected to supply 400,000 German homes with renewable power by 2014.

DanTysk is located 70 kilometres west of Sylt on the border between the German and Danish economic zones and will be Vattenfall’s tenth wind farm. The wind farm is scheduled to be commissioned in 2014 and will have a capacity of 288 MW, or more than twice that of the Swedish wind farm at Lillgrund. It is a joint venture between Vattenfall and Stadtwerke München.

The crane ship Seafox 5 embarked on its maiden voyage with the monopiles, measuring up to 65 metres in length, from the Dutch harbour of Vlissingen near Rotterdam yesterday. The first four of 80 monopiles are now being installed on site in the North Sea. The 151 metre long multifunctional vessel will be used to install the foundations in the North Sea. Seafox 5’s crane is designed to support a load of up to 1,200 tonnes.

“We are very excited to have the first four foundations on site. This is a very important step for us, and installation can now start. We are hoping for good weather and expect to see all 80 foundations and transition pieces in place by August,” says Holger Grubel, Project Director of the DanTysk wind farm.

The monopile foundations are hammered into the seabed at depths of up to 32 metres. During the installation, a double bubble curtain will be used to mitigate noise in order to protect marine mammals.

“Installation of the wind turbines will begin this summer,” says Holger Grubel.

Vattenfall is the second largest offshore wind power operator in the world. Its largest wind farms include Ormonde (150 MW) and Thanet (300 MW) in the UK. Last year, Vattenfall’s wind farms, both on and off-shore, generated a total of about 4 TWh. Vattenfall aims to increase its power generation from renewable energy, such as wind power, in the next few years in order to meet its new sustainability targets. These include reducing CO2 emissions to 65 million tonnes a year and investments in renewable energy in the coming years.
