Siemens brings offshore wind power plant in China online


31.05.2012  + + +  The Jiangsu Rudong Offshore Wind Power Plant began operation in May 2012 and is Siemens' first order for offshore wind power outside Europe. Siemens has installed 21 SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines off the coast of the Rudong district in the East China Sea having a total output of approximately 50 megawatts (MW). Completion of the project is an important step for Siemens in China's fast-growing wind energy market. The customer is Jiangsu Longyuan Offshore Wind Power Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of one of the world's largest wind energy project developers, China Longyuan Power Group Corporation Ltd. The scope of delivery also includes a five-year service and maintenance agreement.

The Rudong Offshore wind power project is located off the coast of the Rudong district in the East China Sea, 250 kilometers northeast of Shanghai. Here, Siemens has erected 21 wind turbines with an output of 2.3 MW each and a rotor diameter of 101 meters.   + + +  Siemens produced the major turbine components of the 50-megawatt project right at the Shanghai production facility. Since November 2010, blades have been fabricated there both for the Chinese market and for export. A nacelle manufacturing facility has been operating at the same location since the spring of 2011. 

The market for offshore wind energy in China is currently gaining momentum. China plans to install wind power plants in the ocean having a total capacity of 30 GW by 2020. With over 20 years of experience in offshore wind power generation, Siemens will be participating in these developments.  + + +   The system is located in an intertidal zone, meaning that the area is dry at low tide but covered by up to five meters of water at high tide. Conditions in China are generally excellent for offshore wind power generation: shallow-water zones with outstanding wind conditions are to be found near coastal power consumption centers.
