South Stream Transport Publishes Russian Environmental Impact Assessment
• Presentation of first findings of environmental assessment for the South Stream Offshore Pipeline in Russia
• Local community invited to comment on the draft environmental report
South Stream Transport has published the preliminary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Russian Sector of the South Stream Offshore Pipeline. The draft EIA Report contains an assessment of the expected environmental impacts of the Project in Russia and proposed measures to avoid or mitigate any negative impacts.
The Russian draft EIA Report has been prepared on behalf of South Stream Transport by the engineering and environmental management company PeterGaz LLC. Experts undertook numerous surveys of animal and plant life in the Black Sea and at the
landfall, and made recommendations to minimize the Project’s impact. The draft EIA Report brings together the results of their assessments and the proposed mitigation measures to construct the Russian Sector of the South Stream Offshore Pipeline
without a significant impact on the environment.
Public consultations help inform assessment
The Russian draft EIA Report has been published online and made available at several locations near Anapa. People with an interest in the Project are invited to provide comments on the Report, and a public hearing will be held in Anapa on 31 May 2013. In accordance with Russian EIA procedures, the Anapa Town Administration will register any comments received so that these may be considered for the final version of the EIA Report.
Marcel Kramer, CEO of South Stream Transport B.V. said: “The involvement of local communities helps us to better understand the potential effects of the Project on the environment, so that we can address these accordingly. We talked to a wide range
of people and organisations during consultations in December 2012 and will continue to seek their input as the Project progresses.”
Comments can be sent to South Stream Transport in writing by post or to esia@south-stream-transport.com. In addition, comment boxes have been placed in public buildings in the towns of Anapa, Varvarovka and
Gai-Kodzor.
