Turkey negotiating contract with Qatar for LNG terminal

In order to meet rising energy demands both domestically and across Europe, Turkey is considering building a liquefied natural gas terminal with Qatar along the Aegean coast, The Nation reported.

Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said the terminal would be located on the Gulf of Saros and have an annual capacity of 5 billion to 6 billion cubic meters (bcm). Turkey supplies energy to Europe, and it is set to overtake Britain as Europe's third-biggest electricity consumer within a decade. The LNG facility could help it provide countries like Bulgaria and Greece with energy and would also help Turkey meets its own rising LNG demand.

“We think it would be appropriate to build an LNG terminal on the Gulf of Saros to meet the needs of Turkey and the region," Yildiz recently told reporters. "Qatar would carry out the feasibility work and evaluate the project."

Qatar is the world's largest LNG exporter, but The Nation said it mostly sells to Asian markets. Yildiz said Turkey is in the midst of negotiating long-term contract with Qatar.
Turkish Weekly also reported the country may be looking to oil exploration in Libya, currently exploring in the country's Fezzan field. However, Yildiz said "it is not enough" and the country "demanded new fields."
