BASF and CWK sign agreement to market molecular sieves

01.11.2010 - BASF SE and Chemiewerk Bad Köstritz GmbH (CWK) signed an agreement for the worldwide marketing of molecular sieves made by CWK for use in natural gas treatment, refineries/petrochemical industry and drying.

Molecular sieves are crystalline, highly porous moulds used for separation and purification on molecular scale. CWK has been making molecular sieves for over 20 years for various applications. In 2010 a new production plant for special-purpose, binder-free molecular sieves was successfully put into operation. This kind of molecular sieves is primarily used for the production and treatment of industrial gases.

"The strategic cooperation of BASF and CWK is an advantage for both sides. We, CWK, benefit particularly from BASF's market presence in areas of application where we have so far shown little presence", stated Dr. Volker Damrath, Managing Director of Chemiewerk Bad Köstritz GmbH. "Through this cooperation CWK's know-how can be made available to more customers to meet their specific needs."

BASF will manage the business through its Adsorbents group, which is part of the Process Catalysts and Technologies business. The molecular sieves associated with this agreement are complementary to BASF’s existing adsorbent product portfolio, which includes proprietary aluminas; specialty alumino-silica gels, such as Sorbead® and KC-Trockenperlen®; petrochemical purification products, such as Selexsorb® and PuriStar®; and bentonites, such as F-24 and NovaSil™.

BASF 3A, 4A, 5A and 13X molecular sieves are commonly used for applications such as drying gases and liquids; cleaning technical gases, petrochemical and natural gases; and oxygen production.

“The addition of molecular sieves to the portfolio makes the BASF adsorbent product suite the most comprehensive in the industry, allowing us to offer our customers the best adsorbent technology for their particular needs,” said Craig Ostroff, Global Business Director, Adsorbents for BASF’s Catalysts division.
