DESERTEC Dii Conference Berlin
Statement from Dr. Thiemo Gropp, Director of the DESERTEC Foundation:
2012-11-08 + + + "Many ministers, CEOs and politicians from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa came together for two days at this year's Dii conference in Berlin to discuss the progress and future plans for the production of green electricity in the Sahara. The conference has shown that the DESERTEC Concept now has widespread support north and south of the Mediterranean and with desert renewables already delivering power to consumers across MENA and political agreements for the first reference projects for export imminent there will soon be many concrete illustrations of its feasibility.
It is a win-win situation: These developments will result in clean energy, new jobs and industries, and development for the growing MENA population and help ensure stability in the region. EU officials see the opportunity to achieve its climate change objectives more quickly and more cheaply through the sharing of the best sites for renewable energy with desert power as an ideal complement to centralized and decentralized renewables in Europe. The DESERTEC Foundation believes it is important to support North Africa to accelerate the transition of the whole EUMENA region to 100% renewables.
The DESERTEC Foundation congratulates the Dii on a successful event and looks forward to continued cooperation on the implementation of the DESERTEC Concept in the Mediterranean region."
The DESERTEC Foundation is the non-profit originator of DESERTEC’s solutions, and a co-founder and shareholder of Dii GmbH. It is active worldwide for the implementation of the globally applicable DESERTEC Concept. At present, the foundation’s focus regions are the Mediterranean, East Asia and South America.
