25.02.2011 + + + DMT has now completed the development of the new generation of drill core scanners. The CoreScan3 system is a portable, high-tech core logging tool generating high-resolution digital images of drill core. Used in combination with dedicated analytical software this technology is DMT’s response to customer requests for mobile, high-quality geological evaluation of drill core. Geologists are able to generate a reliable and transparent data base for the assessment of deposits and reservoirs.
The new model offers two operating modes. It can acquire images of full circumference or slabbed core with a resolution of up to 40 pixel / mm (1000 dpi) or record complete core boxes in a single image.
The scanning software makes it possible to correlate individual images with the corresponding depths and to show them in proper orientation.
The data acquisition process of DMT CoreScan3 is steered by new software. Major progress has been made to increase scanning speed thus increasing production rates. Thanks to the innovative core logging technology, cutting and sampling of the core can be executed immediately after scanning thus analytical data will be available much earlier. The time needed for handling the drill core is reduced to a minimum.
CoreBase2®, DMT’s analytical software, generates a database, into which additional data – thin sections, chemical analyses or core sampling logs – can be imported, stored and graphically depicted together with the scans. The evaluation of geological structures such as strata, cleavages and foliation is effected with integrated pick-up routines. Over and above that, geomechanical parameters (such as RQD) can be determined and shown.
Supplementary software, CoreImageAnalysis®, also makes it possible to conduct sedimentological and mineralogical studies with automated support. Mineral grains are identified and quantified on the basis of colour differences. Thus grain size analyses and statistical studies of mineral grain distribution are possible. All data collected provide quality and quantity parameters and consequently, enable a fast and reliable characterisation of drill core.
Improved protection of the camera and all electric components against dust and splashing water adds to the ruggedness of the tool. CoreScan3 can be operated in core yards and field camps.
The exhibition being staged by the PDAC (Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada) is taking place from March 6 to 9, 2011, in Toronto. www.pdac.ca.
