Red Spider Secures Largest Danish Contract

25.07.2012 + + + Red Spider announced the completion of one of the largest deals in the Scandinavian market to supply the ground-breaking eRED tool to Hess.

Red Spider AS,the Norwegian-based division, have signed an agreement to supply multiple eREDs, for deployment scheduled to start later this year, on the DONG Energy rig in the Hess South Arne field in Denmark.

eRED, the first tool to use the patented ROCT for remotely operating downhole valves, has completed over 100 operations with more than 20 operators and over a quarter of the jobs have been carried out in the Norwegian sectors of the North Sea. The technology is on its way to becoming the industry standard solution for downhole applications such as intervention and completion operations.

The Hess South Arne scope of work includes deployment of a shrouded eRED application in the lower completion to provide a fully independent remote method of isolating the flow path in the liner. This will allow the setting of packers and operation of other hydraulically operated tools in the completion.

Oddvar Dalane, Red Spider’s Regional Manager in Norway, said: “We are delighted to have secured our largest contract win in Denmark. eRED offers major savings and significant risk reduction by removing wireline runs from operations.’’

The eRED valve has allowed major operators to save more than £300,000 (2800,000NOK) during a single subsea completion operation, typically reducing slickline runs from eight to one. In deepwater workover operations, savings of up to 36 hours and £500,000 (4700,000NOK) have also been recorded in a single job, as well as major reductions in risk.

It quickly became apparent from the eRED’s continuing success that there were other potential applications for ROCT in the completion of wells. Further customer requests led to nearly £2million (19million NOK) of investment and over two years of extensive research and development work, which has resulted in products including the eRED-FB.

The eRED-FB valve is the full bore tubing mounted version of eRED. It provides a downhole barrier that can be opened and closed by remote command without posing any restriction to flow. Hess has ordered eRED-FB for their operations in Equatorial Guinea to be used as packer setting device, completely eliminating well interventions during completion operations
