Siemens secures order for sixth offshore-wind power plant in Germany
First time that private equity company invests in Siemens-offshore-wind power plant

05.08.2011 + + + Siemens Energy has secured another order for an offshore wind power plant in Germany. For the project Meerwind Süd and Meerwind Ost the company will deliver 80 wind turbines with a capacity of 3.6 Megawatt (MW) and a rotor diameter of 120 meters each. The customer is WindMW GmbH (WindMW) whose shareholders are funds managed by Blackstone and Windland Energieerzeugungs GmbH. The company is located in Bremerhaven. WindMW is responsible for the planning and construction of Meerwind Süd/Ost and will be operating the wind farm. This is the first time that a private equity company invests in an offshore wind power plant by Siemens. With a total capacity of 288 MW the wind power plant will supply clean energy for approximately 400,000 house-holds after its commissioning in 2013. For Siemens this is the sixth order for an offshore wind power plant in German waters.

Electricity from offshore wind power plants is soon expected to make a major contribution toward eco-friendly power supply in Germany, just as in other countries like the UK. Excellent wind conditions with high average wind speeds open up tremendous potential. By 2030, wind power plants with total capacity between 20,000 and 25,000 MW will be operating off Germany's coasts and delivering eco-friendly electricity.

The offshore wind power plant Meerwind Süd/Ost will be located about 23 kilometer North of the island Helgoland. Siemens is responsible for supply, installation and commissioning of the wind turbines. In addition, Siemens signed a five-year service, maintenance, and warranty agreement. Helgoland will be used as base for the Service Station. The wind turbines will be installed over an area of 42 square kilometers and at water depths from 22 to 26 meters. Construction and commissioning is planned for 2013. After EnBW Baltic 1 (48.3 MW), EnBW Baltic 2 (288 MW), Borkum Riffgat (108 MW), Dan-Tysk (288 MW) and Borkum Riffgrund 1 (320 MW) this is the sixth order for the construction of an offshore wind power plant for Siemens in Germany.

According to the latest World Market Update by BTM Consult, Siemens is the world's largest supplier to the offshore market. At the end of the year 2010, there were almost
700 Siemens-wind turbines with a capacity of over 1,900 MW in operation. Additionally, Siemens has confirmed orders for about 4 Gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind power plants. Several of those projects are already under construction.
