Solar to be grid competitive in Europe by 2013, says EPIA

09.09.2011 + + + A report from the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) has said that PV power generation will be grid competitive in parts of Europe by 2013 and across key European markets by the end of the decade.

It also predicts that Italy will be the first country in which PV will become competitive with fossil fuels.

Ingmar Wilhelm, EPIA president, said that the cost of PV modules will fall about 50 per cent by 2020 because of economies of scale and improvements in technology. The report also predicts a rise in the cost of traditional power sources such as coal and gas over the same period.

The report states that the second measure of competitiveness, “generation value competitiveness”, will take slightly longer to achieve. This refers to the point in a specific country where building PV is just as attractive to investors as building coal or gas plants.
