Vattenfall to build 576 MW North Sea wind farm

25.11.2011 + + + Swedish renewable energy company Vattenfall is planning to build a 576 MW offshore wind farm in the North Sea off Germany. The Sandbank 24 project would be near the island of Sylt and Vattenfall claims it will provide power to around 500,000 German homes.

The wind farm would comprise 96 turbines and construction is planned to start in 2014.
Sandbank 24 will be built near Vattenfall’s ongoing wind farm DanTysk, which it co-owns with Munich’s municipal power utility. DanTysk will provide electricity for 300,000 Germans and is costing $1.4bn. The two wind farms will be operated from Denmark.

Anders Dahl, Vattenfall’s head of renewables, said that the wind farms would play a key role in Germany’s move away from nuclear power to alternative forms of energy.
